Jewelry should not be stored in the box, but in a plastic bag or airtight container when not in use.
You must do this to prevent unnecessary oxidation (your silver tarnishes and discolours / turns black), which is an inevitable reaction when in contact with oxygen and means that your silver jewelery no longer looks as it did when you received it. It's not a fault with your jewellery, it's a completely natural and inevitable process - silver will tarnish no matter what brand you buy. But with proper storage,
the silver tarnishes much more slowly.

If the jewelery is left in the open air, it will oxidize/tarnish, much more than if you store it airtight in a bag or airtight container. This is due to completely natural chemical reactions which cause the surfaces of your jewelery to change. When silver comes into contact with oxygen, a chemical process takes place where the silver is oxidized. With the chemical connection, you see that silver oxide is formed on surfaces. Exactly the same will happen to silver jewelry plated with gold.

However, you don't have to worry about that when your jewelery oxidizes, you can easily clean most of it off in liquid silver cleaner (which can be bought in jewelery shops). You should use liquid silver cleaner, never polishing cloths. They contain abrasives and will grind away your gold coatings.
